How to Clean and Maintain Your uPVC Windows

These days modern uPVC windows require little to no maintenance compared to older timber windows. However, doing some routine maintenance a few times a year will make sure they stay operating well and look as new as the day they were installed. Below is our handy guide to keeping your frames, glass, hinges and locking mechanisms in top condition for years to come.

Cleaning Your uPVC Frames

Standard white uPVC frames will only need a quick clean every couple of months. To do this use warm water mixed with a mild liquid detergent, (such as diluted washing-up liquid) and apply it with a soft microfibre cloth. Make sure to avoid any abrasive cleaning pads or harsh chemical cleaners, as these can scratch or discolour the finish. For stubborn marks, a non-abrasive uPVC cream cleaner can be used sparingly.

If your windows have foiled or woodgrain colours, avoid solvent-based cleaners or polishes. Stick to warm soapy water only and a soft cloth to protect the surface.

Cleaning Glass, Gaskets and Easy-Clean Hinges

For cleaning standard double glazing, household glass cleaner or warm soapy water with a soft cloth will works best. If your windows have self-cleaning glass. Avoid any solvent products or abrasive materials, as these will damage the specialised coating. While cleaning, gently wipe down the rubber weather seals to keep them free from debris.

If your side-hung windows are fitted with Easy-Clean hinges, you can clean the exterior glass from the inside of your home.

Open the window fully to a 90-degree position.
Press and hold down the release buttons located on both the top and bottom hinges.
Slide the window sash along the track towards the centre of the frame to reach the outside of the glass.

Lubricating Hinges and Locking Systems

It’s best to lubricate moving parts around once a year to prevents any stiffness and extend the lifespan of your windows. We suggest a light machine oil, such as 3-in-1 oil.

Friction Hinges: Wipe the metal tracks clean of any dirt and debris, then apply a drop of light oil directly to the pivot points.
Hinge Adjustment: If a window feels too loose or too stiff, locate the turning screw on the friction stay track. Turn it clockwise with a screwdriver to increase tightness, taking care not to overtighten it.
Locking Mechanisms: Apply a small drop of oil to the moving cams on your shoot bolt or espagnolette locking system. Place a small amount of grease inside the frame’s locking keep slots for smooth handle operation.

Checking Night Vents and Drainage Slots

Your uPVC window handles feature built-in trickle ventilation through the night vent locking system. To use the night vent function, open the window by approximately 15mm and then turn the handle into the locked position. Finally, test that it is secured in place by pushing gently against the frame.

Check the internal drainage slots built into the outer bottom threshold of the frame. These slots allow trapped rainwater to flow outside. Clear away dirt and dust every few months to ensure water drains freely.
