Bifold, Sliding, or French Doors: Which is Best?

Jun 23 2026

In recent years, bifold doors have skyrocketed in popularity. But how do they actually differ from traditional door systems, and what unique benefits do they offer? Keep reading as we break down the differences between bifold, sliding, and French doors. Helping you make the best decision for your home. While modern glazing solutions are an excellent way to create a bright, contemporary, and spacious feel. It’s worth weighing the pros and cons of each before making your final choice.

What's the difference?

Bifold Doors

Bifold doors are folding doors made up of multiple concertina panels. Depending on the size of your opening, they can range from 2 to 8 panels. These panels are connected by hinges and slide smoothly along a bottom track using hidden rollers.

They offer complete flexibility as they can fold in or out and stack neatly to the left, right, or both sides. Most configurations also feature a "traffic door" a single master panel that opens independently on a standard hinge. Allowing you to pop in and out quickly without folding back the entire wall.

Sliding Doors

Sliding Doors

Sliding doors feature large, expansive panes of glass that slide along a track, stacking neatly behind one another when open. Usually designed with two, three, or four panels, sliding doors maximize your glass area. Because they don't open in or out they are a great space-saving solution. Particularly for compact patios or rooms where furniture is placed close to the glass.

French Doors

French Doors

French doors feature a pair of hinged, fully glazed doors that swing open in or out. They are designed with slim sightlines and a "floating" central mullion (the vertical bar between the doors). Because this central bar is fixed directly to the secondary door, it moves completely out of the way. So when both doors are open your view is completely unobstructed.

Space & Views

Space & Views

When choosing the right door for your home, two things to consider are your available space and the view you want to achieve. While all glazed doors flood your home with natural light, their functionality differs significantly:

  • Sliding Doors: As an excellent space-saving option, these doors glide parallel to the wall rather than folding inward or outward. They feature expansive glass panels for an uninterrupted view, though you typically cannot open the entire aperture at once since one pane remains fixed.
  • French & Bifold Doors: Both styles can be opened completely to reveal 100% of the opening. French doors offer a classic look for smaller openings, while bifold doors concertina out of the way to seamlessly merge your indoor and outdoor spaces

Thermal Efficiency

Thermal Efficiency

Today's French, sliding, and bifold doors offer exceptional thermal efficiency. While uPVC is a naturally excellent insulator making it a great material choice for French and sliding patio doors. Our aluminium bifold doors also achieve the same high performance thanks to advanced "thermal break" technology.

An aluminum frame conducts heat easily on its own. To stop this, a thermal break (a barrier made of low-conductivity material) is built directly into the metal frame. This layer slows down heat transfer, preventing warmth from escaping during the winter and blocking heat from entering in the summer.

Price

The overall cost of your new doors will completely depend on several factors, including size, style, colour, and configuration. As a general rule, uPVC doors are typically more budget-friendly than their aluminum counterparts. To ensure the highest quality and best value, we manufacture all of our sliding, French, and bifold doors right here at our Swadlincote factory.
